Writer's Day is celebrated annually in Brazil on July 25th. The date was established in 1960 by João Peregrino Júnior, then president of the Brazilian Union of Writers. At the time, the vice-president of the institution was Jorge Amado, an important Brazilian writer.

We prepared this article to explain the origin of the date and pay homage to some of the great Brazilian writers . Check out!


HISTORY OF NATIONAL WRITER'S DAY
National Writer's Day emerged from the Brazilian Writer's Festival, created by members of the presidency of the Brazilian Union of Writers: João Peregrino Júnior and Jorge Amado.

The Minister of Education at the time, Pedro Paulo Penido, made the date official through an ordinance published two days before the chosen day. From then on, Writer's Day began to be celebrated on the 25th of July.

MONTEIRO LOBATO
Monteiro Lobato was one of the first authors of children's literature in Brazil. In addition to being a writer, he was also the editor and creator of Editora Monteiro Lobato and, later, of Companhia Editora Nacional .

The author stood out, mainly, for the universe created in his best-known work: the Sítio do Pica-pau Amarelo series , composed of 23 books. The series has been adapted for film and television several times, in addition to becoming a comic book.

A curiosity about the work of Monteiro Lobato is that Sítio do Pica-pau Amarelo was translated into Spanish, in Argentina, and into Russian. The first translation into English took place only in 2019.

MACHADO DE ASSIS
Machado de Assis has an extensive list of works, which includes novels, short stories, plays, poems and chronicles. The author is considered the introducer of realism in Brazil with the publication of Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas . Of complex definition, the work of Machado de Assis permeates several genres and literary styles.

Machado de Assis was the founder and first president of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, which also came to be called Casa de Machado de Assis . He appointed José de Alencar as patron of his chair at the academy.

The author was nicknamed “Bruxo do Cosme Velho”, given by his neighbors. The reason for this is that he would have burned letters in a cauldron in his house, located on Rua Cosme Velho. The nickname became more popular after the publication of a poem by Carlos Drummond de Andrade in honor of Machado de Assis, called A um bruxo, com amor .

JOSÉ DE ALENCAR
relevant to Brazilian literature for being the Email Marketing Database  forerunner of the nationalist novel. In addition, he was named patron of the chair founded by Machado de Assis at the Brazilian Academy of Letters.

In 1856, Alencar published his first novel, Cinco Minutos . The following year he published A Viuvinha . But it was with O Guarani , published in serials in 1857, that it became popular. Along with Iracema (1865) and Ubirajara (1874), O Guarani is part of the indigenist trilogy — the author's three novels with indigenist themes.



Indianism was one of the main tendencies of Brazilian romanticism, which includes Gonçalves Dias in poetry and José de Alencar in prose. Alencar also produced urban, regionalist and historical novels, as well as plays for the theater. A strong feature of his work is nationalism, which can be seen both in the themes and in the innovations in the use of the Portuguese language.
