In commercial and residential developments, Scott Miller of Remington Development Corporation uses the SketchUp toolset to refine the conceptual design process, moving through all stages of an architectural project. Learn how this SketchUp expert uses his skills to advance his design and construction projects for a major Canadian-based real estate developer. Give us a little background on the roles you've held over the past few years. I am a designer architect who has been in the industry for over two decades. I have worked for several real estate developers, first as an intern architect with Dialog and IBI Group, and now with Remington Development Corporation, where I have designed more than buildings. At IBI Group I was responsible for conceptual design and project management; I worked on to projects facilitating everything from conceptual design to design documentation and construction administration, establishing the stages of an architectural project.

At Remington, I work with a team of brilliant people and focus on the conceptual design phase, researching development opportunities on various land types, or preparing proposals for leasing opportunities. In my current role, coordination is key, so I rely on various tools within and outside of the SketchUp suite to formalize accurate and timely proposals. The suite of software I use daily includes SketchUp Pro, Sefaira, V-Ray, Adobe Photoshop, and Illustrator. Conceptual planning of Quarry Park Riverfront projects Modeled in SketchUp and rendered with Poland Email List V-Ray. How long have you been using SketchUp and why do you choose to continue using it in your projects? I've been using SketchUp since ! I started using the basic features of SketchUp to quickly design ideas. Year after year, I improved my skills and learned how to use SketchUp to design buildings, site plans, and master plans. Now that I have mastered my workflow and various shortcuts, my efficiency has increased significantly. "SketchUp is a very intuitive software that helps me expand ideas, which is why I continue to use it. It allows me to offer our internal group and clients multiple design options quickly.

I also use it to help our group of builders understand the costs associated with the proposed designs, while ensuring compliance with local building codes." River Front plans to show unit density, square footage ratios and parking requirements. Modeled in SketchUp. What is your typical workflow like? Over time, I made my workflow more competitive and in turn became a faster modeler. Typically, my design workflow starts with an idea or concept. Then we test whether this concept adapts to the site, we develop it into plans and a model with distribution, then a more appropriate model for rendering. Depending on the project, I may start modeling with a standard floor plan and transition to a main floor with parking underneath, for example for a residential project. For an office building, the modeling process can be using a structural grid and a parking lot. But, in all projects, the concept is the most important thing and SketchUp helps me explain the idea quickly. To detail my entire workflow process, first and foremost, I generate layout models, which are not very complex but are still based on real building systems.
